Why I Started Strength Training

Friends,

Have you eaten? Have you drank some water? Stretched or taken a quick walk? My kitchen clock gadget is programmed to remind me about these things intermittently throughout the day. It’s hard times out here and caring for ourselves to the best of our ability has to be a non-negotiable.

I believe this so deeply that I started weight training –not because I love it (yet!), but because I know I need to care for my body now more than ever. This practice has reinforced for me the only way I’ll make it through these multicrises is by doing my own work, so I can better support others in doing theirs.

Caring for myself and my community is not a slogan, it’s a promise… a prayer… a benediction, and like any other commitment I have to continually skill up so I am ready for what the moment demands.

My being here means I have a responsibility: to nourish myself, and to nourish every human I meet.

I plan to outlive those who cannot see my humanity and who fight against it every day. (I literally say this to myself every time I lift weights!)

Gaining muscle and more balance, eating, drinking water – I can look at that as me building critical infrastructure, essential for our mental, spiritual and social care and safety. Strong back and legs to stand firm and a soft heart and hands to keep us all close.

Community is where we practice liberation: through our friendships, through keeping our word, not only to others but to ourselves, to understanding the difference between a need and a boundary, through laughter, joy, and sweetness.

Like you, I can feel overwhelmed, overextended, and crispy around the edges, but moving my body, calming my mind and nervous system, and standing shoulder to shoulder with committed loving folks helps to get me through.

Although I know it may not always feel like it, we were built for this moment. So go eat. Go rest. Go and nourish yourself in meaningful ways.

If you find yourself unable, I will hold the vision of strength, safety, and liberation for you –until you’re ready to hold it for yourself.

I see victory in you, in us, — always have, always will.

PS —if you want to be in community on Tuesday, join me for a conversation all about values. You can register here for free, and if you can’t come live you can sign up for the recording.

Boundaries are political

Friends, I’ve taught communications skills for a long time –to folks across sectors, roles, identities. How to handle conflict, ways to call our colleagues in, ways to call folks out, giving feedback, how to apologize, how to do repair, etc. Recently, my colleague...

Welcoming Together at Work

Last month, The Adaway Group turned fifteen! I never expected to start a consulting firm. I thought I would work for a company my entire career but I became so incredibly disillusioned and disappointed with the leadership at my organization that I couldn’t take it one...
